How Do I Use a Web Browser?

The Trade Services system is a web application that is accessed by connecting to the Internet. This topic describes the basics of using a web browser for Trade Services system users who are new to the Internet. For more detailed information about using a web browser, see your browser's online help.

This topic includes the following sections:

What is a Web Browser?

A web browser is an application (or computer programme) you use to find and view information (or "web sites") on the Internet. The most common web browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. No matter which browser you are using, the same content, or information presented by the web site, will display.

The version of the web browser you are using is important. If you are using a version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator that is not supported by the Trade Services system, the system may not work as expected or may not display information properly. Click here for information on the supported web browser versions.

Each web browser has preferences that allow you to control the appearance of the information you view in the browser, as well as define security and technical settings.

Starting the Web Browser

Before you can start using the Trade Services system, you need to connect to the Internet and start your web browser.

Note:      Connecting to the Internet is dependent on your own computer's specific setup and, therefore, is not covered in this online help system. Contact your system administrator if you need more information on how to activate your Internet connection.

To start your web browser:

Visiting a Web Address

Web pages and web applications are stored on many different computers all around the world. To access a web page or web application, you need to know its unique address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Once you are connected to the Internet, you can go to any URL and view the content of the web page or web application. Your bank will provide you with either a URL or a direct link for accessing the Trade Services system.

To go directly to a Web page:

Alternatively, you can access one of the many search engine sites to search for web sites containing the information you are looking for. To access a search engine, click on the Search button on your browser's toolbar.

Browser Options and Preferences

You can define options and preferences in your web browser to control such settings as security levels, the appearance (fonts, colour settings) of web pages, the address of the default home page, and technical options such as Javascript and applets. The procedures for defining browser options and preferences, along with the specific settings that you can define, are different depending on the browser you are using.

Click here for information on the browser options and preference settings that are important to the Trade Services system. Refer to your browser's online help for information on how to define these settings in your browser.
